Congratulations to all who competed at this year's State Championship
tournament. It's been a great year of speech and debate! A few final notes:



1) *Survey:* Please complete this survey

tournaments. The feedback you provide helps the Executive Committee design
the State Championships. The survey includes questions for 1st/2nd Year
State AND Varsity State, so please fill out the section(s) applicable to

*Current standings and a few fun facts:*

1st - Alpharetta, 752 rounds
2nd - Marist School, 525 rounds
3rd - Sequoyah, 347 rounds
4th - Carrollton, 335 rounds
5th - Lassiter, 332 rounds

   - *Grady set a new record for rounds for one school at a State
   Tournament with 333!*
   - *Two schools reached the "100 rounds" milestone at the State
   Tournament: Grady, for the 7th year in a row, and Marist, for the third
   year in a row.*

Some additional fun facts:

   - We had *three* schools attend their first ever State Tournament this
   weekend -* Cherokee, Paulding Co, and Riverwood*
   - We have had only *nine* schools that have attended all seven state
   championships: *Alpharetta, Carrollton, Grady, Marist, Pace, Sequoyah,
   Starr's Mill, Sequoyah, St Pius X, and Woodward*



*3) State Champions:* Congratulations - with some more fun facts! - to each
of our 2017 Varsity State Champions!


   - *Congressional Debate (Senate): *Gregory Federov, Grady High School,
   coached by Mario Herrera. *This is Grady High School's third consecutive
   state title in the Senate.*
   - *Congressional Debate (House)*: Morgan Pace, Columbus High School,
   coached by Lyndsey Hinckley. *This is Columbus High School's first state
   title in Congressional Debate.*
   - *Extemporaneous Speaking: *Sam Lombardo, Grady High School, coached by
   Mario Herrera. *This is the eighth consecutive state title in
   Extemporaneous Speaking for Grady High School*
   - *Impromptu Speaking: *Sam Lombardo, Grady High School, coached by
   Mario Herrera. *Grady has won six state titles in Impromptu Speaking.*
   - *Original Oratory: *Katie Krantz, Lovett School, coached by Mary Kay
   Waterman. *Lovett is the fifth school to win Original Oratory in the
   past five years. This is Lovett's first state title in Original Oratory.*
   - *Dramatic Interpretation: *Maya Nnaeto, Alpharetta High School,
   coached by Sarah Stoffle. *Alpharetta has won back-to-back state titles
   in Dramatic Interpretation.*
   - *Humorous Interpretation: *Patrick Clinch, Dunwoody High School,
   coached by David Gay. *Dunwoody has won back-to-back state titles in
   Humorous Interpretation, and David Gay has coached nine of the past ten
   state champions in this event.*
   - *Duo Interpretation: *Christina Nguyen & Karthik Ramaswami, Alpharetta
   High School, coached by Sarah Stoffle. *Alpharetta has won five of the
   last six state championships in Duo Interpretation.*
   - *Program of Oral Interpretation: *Kailyn Gibson, Lovett School,
   coached by Mary Kay Waterman. *Lovett is only the third school in state
   history to win state championships in two or more speech events in the same
   season.*
   - *Policy Debate:* Tripp Haskins & Max Abramson and Arjun Srinivasan &
   Alanna Pearson, Woodward Academy (close-out), coached by Maggie Berthiaume
   and Bill Batterman. *Woodward has won back-to-back state titles in
   policy debate.*
   - *Public Forum Debate: *Mason Bussey & Craig Cronin, Marist School,
   coached by Jeffrey Miller and Abby Schirmer. *Marist has won three state
   champions in the past six years in Public Forum.*
   - *Lincoln Douglas Debate: *Liam Mullican, Marist School, coached by
   Jeffrey Miller, Abby Schirmer, and Jonathan Waters. *This is Marist's
   first state championship in Lincoln Douglas. Marist becomes the third
   school school to win a state championship in more than one debate event in
   the same season.*

*4) Summit Debate Scholarships:* Thanks to the generosity of our tournament
sponsor, 9th-11th grade students who reached FINALS in IEs or SEMIS in
debate events at the Varsity State Tournament earned a $200 scholarship to
a Summit Debate summer institute. Remember that the scholarship is
nontransferable, and students who reached finals in multiple events only
