I thought I'd send some worksheets that I'm using in my debate classes for
the new Refugees Public Forum topic.

Day 1: John Oliver *Last Week Tonight,* "Migrants & Refugees"
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umqvYhb3wf4> - you should watch prior to
showing to see if it's appropriate for your specific class - I am just
showing some clips from it - not the entire piece. But the kids (and I)
love John Oliver and his does a very good job giving background on the
topic.

After the video and small conversations about the topic wording, I have
them read through some articles on the rhetorical differences on migrants
vs. refugees - something which is vital for students to understand before
they start discussing, researching and speaking on this topic (that's the
worksheet attached).

There are two times on the worksheet I ask the students to answer, "*Why am
I asking this question?"* - the first was about Alexander Betts - the
director of the Refugee Studies Center - the goal there is for students to
realize when you find big names in the literature field we should look them
up and see what they've contributed (the purpose for the follow up HW
assignment).

Second, the last question on the CNN article asks for students to identify
the four countries discussed in the article - this question just leads them
into day 2's activity. It also will hopefully expose that this resolution
is way larger than we may think.

Day 2: Map Activities. I will send this to Maggie tomorrow to post on the
GFCA website. This will run through at least four countries (Eritrea,
Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan). I just need to finish them.

Enjoy!
