I believe the GFCA bylaws give some clarity regarding what constitutes a "novice." The rules are fairly clear on this point. While I am empathetic about the situation, I don't feel there is much wiggle room. Here are the specific the bylaws, 2.81d(6) and 2.81e, page 6:<div>
<br></div><div><div><br></div><div><div><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 1in; "><span style="font-size: 11pt; ">(6) A student who has competed in a different forensic activity but is in their first resolution of policy debate is considered a novice.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in; "><span style="font-size: 11pt; ">(e) A student is no longer eligible for competition in the first-year/novice division once they have reached competition in their second year resolution.</span></p>
