Dear Colleagues,
I hope that you will consider voting to remove the argument restrictions on the first year division. As a coach, I feel as though the packet has been a tremendous success in Georgia Debate. It has helped students learn the basics and has created a more even playing field at the novice level. The numbers in our novice divisions are a great testament to this success. With that in mind, I still feel as though the first year division should be free of any restrictions. Here are a couple reasons for my opinion:
1. The goal of the novice packet is to promote growth in policy debate. To continue with this growth, we must encourage students to expand their knowledge and argument base as they progress. By limiting them to the novice packet at the first year championship, we are not encouraging growth.
2. Due to the limited number of arguments available to debaters last year, teams became more “creative” with their T arguments and thus moved away from the packet and reduced rounds to non-theory-theory debates. This did not make for good debate.
Sincerely,
Jeremy Spiegel
