Area Fellows
As your tournament tour guide, I have been studying the calendar trying to figure out the best date, time and format for our competition. I would appreciate it if you would reply and indicate your preferences. I listed the possible options that I see and my concerns about each option. Let me know if you know of other possibilities or concerns.
As I understand the rules, we could compete on any agreed upon date between Feb1 and March 12. We can have a single tournament or multiple tournaments for different events. Please correct me if I have misunderstood these rules.
Possible weekends then include:
Feb. 4-5 is already the date set for the GFCA first and second year state competition. Can the Area tournament happen at the same time? I don’t really think this is practical, especially as we have traditionally used experienced debaters to coach and judge at that tournament. Moreover, I’ve agreed to appear in a production of Hairspray that weekend.
Feb. 11-12 is at the same time as the Thespians conference, and I will need to attend that event.
Feb. 18-19 coincides with the Harvard, Berkley and Liberty Bell tournaments that some of us plan to attend.
Feb. 25-26 is the NFL district tournament for both districts.
Mar. 4-5 is the UGA tournament, and many of our policy teams will be competing.
Mar.11-12 Can we compete on that Saturday? Does that fall within the rules? Technically it is less than 14 days before the beginning of the State tournament. Another concern is the GHSA Literary tournament. I’m not sure how many of you will be involved, and how flexible your Literary Coordinators are about working around us. Could we combine our event with Literary if that is a conflict for some of you?
Would any of you be interested in a weeknight instead?
How would you feel about splitting the qualifier and competing non policy on the UGA weekend and policy on the Literary weekend?
Please send me your thoughts.
Lisa Willoughby
